On my recent trip to Ari Bhod, I brought my new little camera to see what it could do!  So much fun I can’t even handle it.  Enjoy people, enjoy.

Triple Chocolate Cookies

When I was younger, I considered becoming a chef.  I spent hours pouring through cook books and magazines to find the perfect recipes.  I focused most of my efforts on baking.  I would spend half the day making seven layer torts, chocolate truffles, carrot cakes and whatever else.  While other kids were out playing, I was watching cooking shows and dreaming of Williams Sonoma.  I was always invited to events with the disclaimer that I had to show up with some new creation.  I think that like most artists, my artistic endeavors aren’t confined to one medium and that cooking is just another way for me to express myself.  This love of baking and cooking never left and I still find myself cooking for people all the time.  Mostly, it’s when I am volunteering for Ari Bhod.  You haven’t cooked until you have tried figuring out a kitchen in high altitude.  It’s a challenging environment that forces you to search for creative ways to feed large groups of people.   Needless to say, it is always a rewarding task.

In recent years, I have fallen in love with the online recipe communities like allrecipes.com.  It helps to read other folks comments on recipes and see where they had difficulties and where they made modifications.  I have always been known for my chocolate chip cookies, but I came across a recipe for triple chocolate cookies from the food network site that everyone loves.  I made these for Thanksgiving and they were an instant hit! As is my tendency, I modified the recipe. Instead of using semi sweet chocolate chips, I used cholate – white swirl chips instead..  I think the white chocolate really balances out the flavor and doesn’t make it a chocolate overload situation.  Also, whatever you do, don’t leave out the cloves.  These cookies are super yummy and are moist, almost like brownies.  Perfect for the holidays. Now that I have moved out of my place (YAY) I can focus on the holidays and gift giving.  I have a bunch of ideas on how to make this holiday season great on a tight budget. And lets face it, everyone’s budget this year, is a little tight.  Keep this cookie recipe handy as I will show you later how to incorporate it into your gift giving season!

Moving to the Mountains

king for a day fool for a li mp3 I just wanted to write a quick post. I am in the process of moving. I will be dividing my time between Los Angeles and Tehachapi. Why Tehachapi you say? I am a volunteer for the American Foundation for Tibetan Conservation AKA Ari Bhod. I am now in the process of moving out of my Silverlake place and gearing up for the mountains and for Winter!

As a side note, when I moved back to LA from NY I thought I would NEVER need my winter clothes. Which, for those of you who knew me in New York during winter time, knows that this is laughable. My “idea” of winter clothes was well, exactly what you would expect from a Valley Girl. Not enough layers and boots that looked warm but weren’t water resistant. I think it took the entire three years of living there before I got the idea. And even then, aside from the proper winter coat, I was clueless.

However, having the best Jewish mother ever, my mom was kind enough to find me boots for an early birthday present! And not just any boots, but Merrell “Spirit Tibet” Boots. I thought the name was very fitting.

Let the early Birthday present shopping begin!!! OH! and for those of you who would like to get in on the birthday gift express train, my birthday is December 12th (12/12)! XO

Snowed In

.!.

Wow!  You would think that after living in New York for three years that I would be used to the snow. Nope!  Especially since I never drove in it.  Being high on a mountain that has an unpaved, dirt road leading up to it, and finding yourself suddenly buried under two feet of snow and needing to come down for the holidays proved to be quite the challenge!  Growing up in the San Fernando Valley never prepared me for this.  Luckily, one of the folks up there had to come down too and was brave enough to make the trek down.  We all survived.  YAY!

Oh, did I mention that there was a truck snowed in and that I had to push it out of the snow?  Fun Times.

Here’s what I saw when I woke up in the morning.
