Obsession

I think it’s safe to say that there are certain bands that just change your life forever.  I know I have a pretty long list, but there are some bands that I STILL listen to on a consistent basis, twenty years later.  Roxy Music is so one of those bands.  I mean, how can you go wrong with Bryan Ferry and Brian Eno, oh right, you can’t.  So I still find myself driving around LA listening to Roxy Music on an almost daily basis.  I’m sure this comes as no surprise to the folks that know me, but for the folks that don’t know me or for some crazy reason, don’t know the brilliance that IS Roxy Music… Here’s a little glimpse into my world. Bill Callahan

Bill Callahan, O how I love thee.  I have spent the greater portion of my adult life listening to Bill Callahan aka Smog aka (Smog).  There are few musicians I listen to as often or as much as him except for perhaps William Oldham aka Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy  aka Palace aka Palace Music aka Palace Brothers and the worth mentioning Superwolf.  And just to make this tangent even longer, I just want to throw out that my idea of the “DREAM TOUR” would be Bill Callahan and Will Oldham touring together.  Just saying.  hint hint Drag City :)   Anyway, I am so super excited about yet another record from Bill Callahn coming out soon, soon, soon.  And came across this OMG amazing cover he just did streaming on Pitchfork.  Yay Pitchfork.  So take a listen to it here and enjoy this picture I took of Bill on his last tour. It’s one of my favorites :)

Obsession

What I love most about driving around in Los Angeles is listening to 88.5 KCSN’s America Alternative.  Love it people, seriously LOVE IT!  So when I got into my car a few mornings ago and turned it on and heard some bad ass Bobby Osborne It just made my day!  It is all I have been listening to when I am at home.   I think it is safe to say that music has always been a driving force in my life.  Especially growing up in L.A. where you spend a lot of time driving around in your car.  The music you listen to can become the perfect soundtrack for your commute.  And for me, I am often working out a painting or idea for a photo while I’m driving. So if I’m not listening to NPR or whatever I have on me, I’m usually flipping through the radio because sometimes I want to be surprised by something instead of just listening to what my normal predilections are. flo rida sugar download

Akron/Family

Friday, March 27th, 2009

One of my favorite bands and really some of my favorite folks are the Akron/Family. I originally found out about them because they were playing with Michael Gira from the Swans in the band Angels of Light and were serving double duty as his opening band as well. As life in New York can sometimes be, you end up meeting people that know people and well you rather quickly find yourself becoming friends. As was the case with these boys and me. I saw them play at a little record store, knowing nothing about them and a few months later we were running around the East River, taking pictures.

This one served as their promo poster and on their promotion items for their Akron/Family and Angels of Light split album. It was a total honor for me to even be associated with such a great label and over the years I can honestly say that I wholeheartedly agree with M. Gira that they are the best live band around.

Their new record just came out and if you know what’s good for you, you’ll buy it then go see them play when they come to your town. You’ll be glad you did!
