Horses in Love

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

I was on tour with the Akron/Family and woke up one morning in a small town and went out with my camera while everyone was still sleeping.  It was drizzling outside while I took these and I had to fight to keep my camera clean, but it was well worth it.  I watched these two horses for a short while and they slowy moved to their heads towards each other and I snapped this photo, right after they moved away.  Timing was definitely everything when it came to this image.

I walked down the way a bit and found these three horses and was so moved by the perfect stillness and beauty while they grazed in the rain.

The Ranch

I think it’s safe to say that I consider myself a “lo-fi”, documentary photographer. Which, doesn’t mean I only shoot with a Holga or toy camera.  It just means, I’m a minamalist in terms of set up.  I like to be portable… I’m not hating on Holga, in fact, some of my favorite photos I have ever taken are with my beloved Holga camera.  This just wasn’t one of those times.   So when I recently visited my friend on a Ranch in Valley Center, I made sure I had my Canon DSLR with me.  While waiting at the gate to be let in, a horse came galloping towards me.  While i pet the horse through the gate I saw the donkey behind her and started laughing.  Then “Donkey” came up to say hi too and by hi I mean, try to bite my hand.  Luckily, I was on to the donkey’s trickery and managed to move my hand out of the way in time.  My friend came down in the Gator and after I parked my car, gave me a tour of the property.

Right before I left, I snapped a few pictures.  I hope to visit again soon, so I can spend more time on the property.  Artistically, I’m really motivated and inspired by my surroundings and the spontaneity of the moment.   Here’s one of my favorites from that day.  Having said that, there are times when I don’t have time to photograph a specific location or while shooting I am unable to photograph other elements in that area and keep a mental list of places I need to revisit.  Next time I visit the ranch, I promise to take pics of the donkey, horse and OMG pig. PROMISE! XO
